Mdou Moctar
Sahel Sounds Mdou Moctar -LP/digi- (NG,2013)****
I really can’t tell too much about this record, about this artist or about the recording itself. What I do understand is that Mdou Moctar had played with Bombino before but very much has a voice of its own. We hear a couple live tracks that were recorded a night: they are heavy electric, with drums and enthusiastic participants, with public and participants melting into the session performance, with an attractive wildness, which also includes electric bass and drums. Then we also have many more acoustic tracks. All of these tracks are remarkably and convincingly well recorded with a good sound balance. On the acoustic tracks we have great lead picking with a few bass string rhythms, handclaps like a softer accompaniment, somewhat responded or joined in by other singers. When songs appear they are also expressed with a certain friendly softness. The whole recording sounds warm and warm-hearty, something that make this record in fact a very good, highly enjoyable one.
