Sahelsounds Zabaya : Azna de L'Ader -digi/LP- (NI,70s?,re.2016)***°°

"Forty years coming, Azna de L’Ader finally has an official release! One of the seminal rock bands from Niger, Azna was hardly known outside of the country – and mostly confined to the Tahoua region of Niger. The LP version features highlights of their recording history, restored and remastered from the archives at Radio Niger (ORTN). Vinyl edition comes with a book of photos and liner notes."

Although we heard already some great fuzz releases from Africa before, this album I think still is the wildest and toughest and most acid rock album so far. Lots of electric fuzz leads here, -led by Mona (real name: Abdoulaye Bouzou)- that are played in a slightly improvised manner, very bluesy, heavy and loud and with wild fuzz, with moments of loud voice. More than Afro-rock this more has something of Touareg blues when coming to songs than Afro-rock, the electric guitar itself clearly is Jimmy Hendrix voodoo child bluesrock inspired. Some of the tracks aren’t perfectly preserved but in the remastering they made the best out of it. While there’s a simple blues acid rock groove overall, there are moments (on side B especially) where they go more berserk and wild making those tracks somewhat a must to have checked out some day. Just a bit a shame the best track stops suddenly after such a hypnotic ride. Mostly it’s electric guitar (fuzz and wah-wah), bass and drums, sometimes voice, also congas are heard sometimes working well with it.
