한국대중음악 역사에서 1950년대는 미개척지로 남아있다. 해방 이전보다도 자료보존이 빈약한 이 시기의 대중음악 연구와 발표된 노래들의 정확한 실체 찾기는 마치 달나라로 가는 미지의 여행과도 같다. 실제로 50년대 대중가요들은 작사, 작곡 , 편곡, 연주자의 크레디트는 물론이고 발표 년도와 제작 음반사조차 불명확한 혼돈의 상태로 방치되어 있다.

금사향(본명 최영필)의 대표곡 '홍콩아가씨'는 50년대를 대표하는 히트곡이자 지금도 불리어지는 국민애창곡이다. 가난했던 50년대 대중에게 이국에 대한 환상을 심어준 이 노래 역시 그동안 발표 연도가 정확하지 못했다. 전쟁의 우울함을 잠시 잊게 해준 중국풍의 경쾌한 멜로디가 인상적인 이 노래의 원제목은 '香港아가씨'로 한국전쟁이 막바지로 치닫던 1952년에 손로원이 작사하고 이재호가 작곡한 노래다. 그래서 그동안 1952년에 발표된 노래로 알려져 있었다. 하지만 '전쟁이 끝난 후 결혼을 하고 부산에서 취입했었다'는 금사향 선생의 증언과 1954년 발표된 한정무의 <꿈에 본 내 고향>과 함께 수록되어있는 것으로 미뤄 음반으로 공식 취입된 것은 1954년이 분명해 보인다.

부산 피난 1954년 취입

'향항아가씨(홍콩아가씨)'는 한국전쟁 당시, 부산에 피난 온 한복남이 창립한 도미도레코드를 통해서 처음 발표되었다. 한국전쟁 이후, 극심한 경제적 궁핍으로 고단한 삶을 살았던 50-60년대 대중에게 '홍콩'이라는 말은 공간적 개념보다 자유, 동경, 향락, 풍요로움을 의미하는 정신적 개념이 강했다. 70년대부터 널리 유행했던 '홍콩 간다'는 말은 '기분이 좋아 헤롱거린다', '뽕간다' 등의 뜻으로 쓰였다. 실제로 당시엔 중국 음식점 간판들은 북경반점보다 홍콩반점이 더 많았다. 금사향의 차별성은 독특한 보컬 음색뿐 아니라 무대를 가리지 않았던 열정의 화신 같은 화통한 성품을 빼놓을 수 없다.

금사향은 1929년 평양에서 태어났다. 1946년 상공부 섬유국 영문 타이피스트로 근무하던 중, 작곡가 박시춘과 작사가 조명암이 심사를 본 럭키레코드사 주최 전국 가수선발 경연대회에 출전해 박재홍에 이어 2위에 입상한 그녀는 서울중앙방송국(KBS전신)의 1기 전속가수가 되었다. 애교 넘치는 은방울 같은 목소리를 지닌 그녀는 박시춘으로 부터 '오빠는 풍각쟁이야'로 유명한 박향림의 후계자가 될 재목으로 칭찬을 받았다.

19세 때 발표한 데뷔곡 '첫 사랑'이 좋은 반응을 얻었을 때 한국전쟁이 터졌다. 금사향은 포탄이 떨어지는 전쟁터 위문 공연장을 누비며 노래했던 열혈여장부였다. 트럭 두 대를 연결해 만든 간이무대에서도 군인들을 위로했고 폭우가 쏟아지는 야외무대에 서는 감전될까 염려되어 저고리 고름으로 마이크를 감싸 쥐며 노래를 부르기도 했다. 그녀는 국군위문단으로 최전방에 공연을 갔을 때 알게 된 노래 잘하는 젊은 군인이 다음 날 무장공비에 의해 사망하는 상황에서도 무대에 오르는 강단을 보였다. 다들 만류했지만 전우를 잃은 이들의 마음을 모른 척 할 수 없었던 그녀의 강직한 성품을 읽을 수 있는 에피소드다.

1952년 한국전쟁 중에 오리엔트레코드를 통해 발표한 '님 계신 전선'은 남편을 전선으로 떠나 보낸 아내와 그 가족들 의 슬픔을 애잔하게 노래했다. 이 노래 역시 공전의 히트를 기록했고 전쟁터를 누비던 금사향을 인기가수로 견인했다. 당시는 공연만 하는 가수와 레코드 취입만 하는 가수가 따로 있었다. 그래서 무대에서 노래는 불렀지만 음반 한 장 남기지 못하고 사라진 가수가 허다했다. 문학적 재질이 있었던 금사향은 작사 작업에도 재능을 보였지만 유달리 작은 키에 대한 콤플렉스가 있어 레코드 취입가수로만 활동을 하려고 했다. 당시 한복에 하이힐을 신고 무대에 오른 가수는 그녀가 최초였다고 전해진다.

'증류수'같은 목소리란 평가처럼 간드러지면서도 맑고 청아한 금사향의 보컬은 귀에 콕콕 박혀오는 독특함이 있다. "'홍콩아가씨' 덕분에 도미도레코드가 벽돌집을 샀다"는 소문까지 나돌게 했던 이 노래는 금사향의 대표곡이 되었고 시대를 초월해 수많은 후배가수들이 리메이크 작업에 기꺼이 동참한 명곡이 되었다.

“1946년 열아홉 나이에 럭키레코드사가 주최한 전국가수선발경연대회에서 5000명을 제치고 1등을 했어. 그래서 당시 중앙방송국(현 KBS) 전속 가수 1기로 활동을 시작해 지금까지 67년간 노래 외엔 아무것도 안 했어. 돈 욕심도 없었고. 내가 활동할 때는 가수가 별로 없었지만 지금은 가수들이 너무 많으니까 이제는 붕어빵 장수도 할 수 있을 것 같아.(웃음)”

우연히 나간 가수경연선발대회서

1등 거머쥐며 화려한 데뷔

지난 16일 그가 생활하고 있는 일산의 한 요양센터에서 만난 그는 대뜸 “‘진달래’란 이 방 이름이 예쁘지 않아? 내가 제일 좋아하는 꽃이거든”이란 말로 인사를 대신했다. 그의 방 벽엔 그를 방문했던 초·중·고생들의 “할머니, 정말정말 아름다우세요!” “할머니 사랑해요!”라고 쓴 편지와 함께 할리우드 스타 메릴린 먼로와 한류 스타 장근석의 사진이 “보기 좋다”는 공통 이유로 나란히 붙어 있었다. 그는 연신 걸려오는 공연 섭외 전화로 바빴다. 지금으로선 좀 상상이 안 가지만, 1950~60년대 인기가 절정이었던 그때나 지금이나 그에겐 매니저가 없다. 작은 비닐봉투에 한가득한 메모지에 빼곡하게 굵은 글씨로 적어놓은 메모를 뒤적이며 일정을 확인하곤 한다. 얼마 전에도 경남 사천문화예술회관 대공연장에서 펼쳐진 추억의 가요무대에 섰고, 14일엔 곧 방영될 KBS ‘가요무대’를 위해 녹화했다. “노래하다 흥에 못 이겨 쓰러지면 저 여자 시체 다 됐다고 흉 볼까봐 안전 빵으로” 의자에 앉아 노래를 불렀지만.

“한창때는 스타라 (대기실 분장실도) 독방을 썼고, 여기 들어와선 죽을 때까지 이 독방을 써. 그런데 사람들은 내 목소리가 한창때나 지금이나 별반 달라지지 않았다고 해.(웃음) 워낙 고음이라 드러누워서도 다 소리를 낼 수 있어. 밥은 사흘이면 쉬는데, 난 지금 그 밥에 곰팡이가 낀 격이어서 얼굴이 묵은지에 양념한 것 같고, 입술에 바른 립스틱은 헌 구두에 구두약 칠한 것 같지만 그래도 괜찮다고 하면 내 팬들이 재미있다고 막 웃어. 젊었을 때는 입에 지퍼 채운 듯 말을 못 했지만 나이 들어 무대 서니 말이 막 술술 나오는 것이 신기해.(웃음)”

사실 그는 말년 막바지에 생활고로 고생했다. 경기 고양시 동산동 공기 좋고 한적한 곳에 연예인 마을을 만들고 싶었고, 이를 위해 아껴왔던 종잣돈을 믿고 있던 지인에게 사기당한 후 인근 가건물에서 기초생활수급자로 어렵게 생활해왔다. 온몸 아프지 않은 데가 없어 ‘인조인간’으로 불리기도 했다는 그는 심각한 퇴행성 관절염으로 바깥 출입이 힘든 때도 있었지만 가수 남일해 등의 도움으로 웰튼병원에서 무료 인공관절 수술을 받아 제2의 무대인생을 계속할 수 있게 됐다. 그는 “살아 있을 때 돈은 (세상과 나를 연결해주는) 연락선 같은 것, 돈 한 푼 없어도 내 마음속에 희망이 있으면 그게 천당이고, 절망이 가득 차면 그게 지옥 아니겠어? 똑같은 분위기에서도 생각만 바꾸면 천당이 되는 거야”라며 요즘도 기분 내키면 혼자 버스에 올라 창밖 풍경을 보다가 내려서 카페에 들어가 젊은이들의 모습을 즐겁게 바라보곤 한다고 했다. 이런 초긍정 낙관주의가 통했는지 2010년 한 해만 대한민국 연예예술상 대상과 특별공로상을 연거푸 수상한 데다가 지난해엔 대한민국 대중문화예술상 은관문화훈장 수상의 영예를 안기도 했다.

“몇 년 전 팔순잔치를 강화도 선원사에서 내 히트곡 ‘임 계신 전선’(작곡 박시춘) 노래비를 세우며 했어. 그때 주지승이 나를 평생 모시겠다고 했는데, 단번에 싫다고 했어. 이래 봬도 내 코가 육쪽마늘 코야. 평생 단 돈 천 원도 안 꿔 썼어. 돈이 없으면 시금치죽 쒀 먹으면 되지, 남에게 아쉬운 소리 하거나 도움 받을 일이 뭐 있어? 속상하면 속상한 맛으로 사는 게 인생 아니겠어?”

그의 집안에서 그는 유일무이한 대중 연예인이다. 아버지도, 오빠도 바이올리니스트로 활동한 음악가 집안에서 자란 그는 높은 경쟁률 속에 당시 상공부 섬유국 타이피스트로 합격한 잘나가던 직장 여성이었다. 전국가수선발경연대회에 나가게 된 것도 혼자 흥얼거리던 노랫소리를 들은 주변 사람들이 목소리가 예쁘니 나가보면 어떻겠느냐는 권유에서 비롯됐다. 다른 가수 지망생들은 “온 가족이 동원돼 사이다와 소금을 가지고 와서 열렬히 응원하는데, 난 웬 용기가 났는지 홀로 무대에 섰고 덜컥 합격했다”는 것이다.

지금 생각해 보면 ‘홍콩아가씨’는 전후 배고프고 비참하고 절망하던 사람들에게 아련한 희망을 안겨준 노래 같아. 노래 속 자유로운 분위기 자체가 희망이 된 것 같고, 이게 사교춤으로도 이어졌지.”

사실 그는 무대의상에 새 기운을 불어넣은 선구자 격이다. “하늘 같았던” 선배 신카나리아(1912~2006)가 무대의상은 인조견 한복만으로도 충분하다고 충고했지만 “팬들이 먼 데서만 나를 보란 법이 있느냐”며 “최고급 양단, 뉴똥(명주실로 짠 옷감)으로 한복 의상을 만들 것”이라고 대꾸할 정도로 옷에 대해서만은 소신이 강했다. 당시 가수들 세계에선 “하루 선배가 대령, 하루 후배가 신병”이라며 아무리 좋은 음식과 과일이 들어와도 선배가 먼저 손을 대지 않으면 절대 손을 안 댈 정도로 위계질서가 엄격한 때였다.

“군대 위문공연 때인가 한복에 8㎝ 뾰족구두를 무대에서 처음 선보였어. 작은 키 탓도 있었지만 한복 입으면 꼭 고무신만 신고 노래 부르란 법은 없다고 생각했어. 갓난아기들의 돌 버선 앞코에 수놓은 매화꽃에서 힌트를 얻어 무대의상에 수를 넣는 것도 처음 시도했지. 치마폭에 큼지막하게 공작 두 마리가 마주보고 있는 것을 수놓아 시선도 끌었지. 지금은 스팡클(반짝이)이 흔하지만 당시엔 귀해서 브로치를 한 서른 개 정도 사서 옷 곳곳에 무늬처럼 달아 스팡클 효과를 내기도 했고, 철공소에서 구리줄을 사서 그걸 ‘에스(S)’자로 만들어 머리에 딱 핀처럼 꽂아 멋을 내기도 했어. 요즘 가수들로선 상상도 못할 얘기지? 우리 전에 대선배들의 경우엔 솥 밑에 낀 검정 그을음을 손톱으로 긁어내 이것을 돼지 비계와 섞어 눈썹 그리는 연필로 사용했다고 하니, 거기에 비하면 그래도 좀 나은 편이었지.

하여튼 새까만 벨벳으로 만든 의상과 흑장미 꽃을 달고 홀로 스포트라이트를 받으며 노래를 부르니 조그만 서양 인형처럼 보여 넋이 빠져 풀썩 주저앉는 관객도 있었다고 해.(웃음)”

8㎝ 하이힐, 구리줄 헤어핀 등 무대의상 개척

“겹치기 출연 욕심 안 부린 게 장수 비결”

생계를 위해 국제시장에서 ‘울고 넘는 박달재’의 가수 박재홍(1927~89)이 전기용품을 팔고, ‘애수의 소야곡’의 가수 남인수(1918~62) 부부가 샌드위치를 팔던 부산 피란 시절을 거쳐 그는 지금까지도 크고 작은 무대에 끊임없이 서고 있다. 본명은 ‘최영필’이지만 예명 ‘금사향’에 담긴 “거문고 실이 울리는 소리”란 뜻이 가진 섬세하면서도 길디긴 잠재적 역량 때문일까.
