Nam Il Hae’s vibrating voice in the slow notes is something that suits well for slow atmospheres with orchestra and some jazzy Big Band elements. This kind of vibrato to one’s voice in longer notes is unusual for western music, but is seen and is also easy interpretable as an emotional quality to singing in Korea, which gives an advantage that a singer can sing this way until his last moments. The atmosphere this evokes, with a certain aspect of crime movie suspense and also a nightclub association, has its own typical attraction.
The second CD contains more often more sparse arrangements coming to the front with guitar, emphasized rhythms and accordion, changing the atmosphere a bit while keeping the filmic song association. Some other songs have a small attractive classical background choir, worth mentioning (like track 11).

15 비 내리는 부두 / Rainy Pier (1957)
This is a trot song (lots of cracks) with accordion lead, clarinet and acoustic guitar on a very slow rhythm. Nam Il Hae's warm baritone voice vibrates a bit which I think musically suits to the trot genre more than it would explore the song content. It's slowness however gives it still a special late night atmosphere.

CD1 6 타향의 사나이 / Man of Offense
"Rebellion" this time completely focusses upon the jazz style (double bass led, with some brass and vibes arrangements). It is a great track to take out. Nam Il Hae's voice suits to this different approach very much. "Man of Offense" with banjo and string arrangements amongst other elements is lighter, basically is trot music with a pop edge.

This song starts with the sound of war plane and is carefully orchestrated and arranged (strings, solo mouth harmonica and brass band) leading to a marching song, probably meant to mobilize people for a "glorious war". Several voices sing the same song. Probably with the idea of together we are strong, let's march together to our goal or so.

This is a orchestrated song in tasteful trot style that has all qualities of most songs in which to recognize the singers most general approach. Such songs have a certain romantic feel ; they are well arranged and its voice suits them perfectly. For the trot genre, Nam Il Hae delivered tasteful music.

Nam IL Hae's partial approach makes him the kind of Frank Sinatra of Korea. His singing and songs in this genre are tasteful and are great to listen too. For that part of his career he's a fine person to collect. Besides that he also sang trot music which is in fact less interesting.
