Tracks with * I consider essential listens or classics, or tracks to check out for sure because for some reason they seem to stand out as unique moments, which makes them also very suitable for western radioshow airplay. Tracks that are only underlined can be considered fine tracks you might better check out as well, but I am not sure how essential they are.
Item with much hardrock in it, appreciated by Western collectors. Has also something primitive "tough guy attitude" in the hardrock tracks. You can hear a great electric guitar solo on this 3rd track. 4th track is a more soft poprock track. Also 5th track is more "rock". I understand the importance of the group, but still I find the full item overrated. It surely has many good elements. These tracks are the most inventive ones. Last track is brilliant instrumental (progressive/psychedelic) hard rock performance, making the album more valuable.

음반소개. 오리지널 마스터 음원 그대로 발매되는. 국내 하드록의 진정한 유산 1960년대 말에서 1970년대 초반에 이르는 그나마 길지 못했던 국내 록 음악의 역사는 1975년 소위 '긴급조치 9호'라는 족쇄에 붙들려 그동안 쌓아왔던 그 모든 것을 한순간에 잃어버리게 되었다. 그나마, 디스코라는 새로운 유행에 편승할 수 있었던 나머지 몇몇 그룹들은 고고클럽의 어둠 속으로 숨어버리고, 그렇지 않고 밝은 곳에서 활동하고 싶었던 밴드 마스터나 보컬 출신의 음악인들은 트롯과 고고가 믹스된 '트로트 고고' 내지는 '록뽕'이라는 신조어를 탄생시키며 히트 차트를 오르내리게 된다. 물론, 그 모든 활동들이 위에 이야기 했던 시기인 60년대 말에서 70년대에 이르는 소위 국내 록의 르네상스 시절과는 비교할 수 없는 어쩌면 국내 록에 있어서 가장 어두웠던 암흑기라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 앞이 보이지 않던 암담했던 시기에 록 음악이 다시 한 번 새로운 출발을 하게 된 계기는 아이러니하게도 그 '긴급조치 9호'라는 막강한 권력을 휘둘렀던 집단을 배경으로 했던 '대학 가요제'였다. 물론 여기서의 대학 가요제란, MBC라는 한 방송국에서만 개최되었던 행사를 의미하는 것이 아니라, 그 대학가요제를 필두로 여타 방송국들에서 앞 다투어 만들어진 캠퍼스 페스티벌 모두를 일컫는 말이다. 1977년 처음으로 열렸던 MBC 대학가요제에서 서울 대학교 농과대학 출신의 그룹 샌드 페블스의 대상 수상은 다른 캠퍼스 그룹들에게는 자신감을 또 지금까지의 TV와 라디오를 독식해온 기성 가요에 식상해 있던 젊은 청자들에게는 또 다른 신선함으로 다가왔음에 틀림없다. 그때부터 캠퍼스 그룹들의 무대는 한해에 한두 번 열리던 정기 발표회나, 교내 축제의 초대가수의 자리에 국한되지 않고, 보다 크고 보다 많은 청중들이 있는 자리로 옮겨갈 수 있게 되었다. 물론, 이들이 가요제를 통해서 발표하는 많은 곡들은 어쩌면 '록'이라는 원초적인 음악에 접근하기에는 무리가 있었을 지도 모르지만, 가요제 수상의 후광을 얻은 이들의 발표회에 빠짐없이 등장하는 해외 그룹들의 레퍼토리들인 딥 퍼플(Deep Purple)이나, 그랜드 펑크 레일로드(Grand Funk Railroad), 유라이어 힙(Uriah Heep), 또는 레드 제플린(Led Zeppelin)등의 커버곡 들은 이들의 숨은 실력을 보여주기에 충분한 것이었다. 하지만, 이들이 출연하는 TV 프로그램이나 몇몇 발표회를 접하면서 한구석 석연치 않은 부분이 바로, 창작곡에 대한 문제였다. 종주국의 음악들은 그렇게 잘 연주하고 노래하면서, 자신들의 음악을 할 때는 그 원초적인 힘이 없을까 하는 부분 말이다. 마그마라는 그룹의 위치는 그런 의미에서 볼 때 수없이 명멸했던 많은 캠퍼스 그룹들 가운데에서 단연 독보적이라고 할 수 있다. 대학가요제의 예선에서부터 보여줬던 그 파워풀한 연주와 하이톤의 보컬은 "드디어 이제는 우리나라에서도…"라는 왠지 모를 뿌듯함을 안겨주었던 게 사실이다. 마그마는 베이스 기타와 보컬을 담당하는 조하문에 의해 결성된 그룹이다. 조하문은 1978년 대학 입학 당시 아스펜스(Aspense)라는 5인조 그룹에서 기타를 담당하다가 기타리스트가 탈퇴하는 바람에 포지션을 베이스로 옮겼다. 아스펜스는 젊은이의 가요제에 출전하기도 했지만 예선에서 고배를 마셨고, 어렵사리 준비했던 공연이 당시 10.26 사건으로 무산된 후 해산하게 된다. 이후 조하문이 3학년이 되며 가장 소규모의 편성으로 밀도 있는 음악을 하려 재편성한 밴드가 바로 마그마다. 그가 인터뷰에서 밝힌 바에 의하면 어린 시절 가장 충격적으로 들었던 국내의 록 음악은 베이스 라인이 인상적인 신중현과 엽전들의 '저 여인'이었다고 한다. 신중현과 엽전들 역시 3인조의 가장 기본적인 록 음악의 편성이라는 점은 재편성되는 그룹의 인원을 3인조로 만드는 중요한 이유 중의 하나로 자리 잡게 된다. 마그마는 조하문과 김광현(기타), 그리고 문영식(드럼) 이렇게 3인조로 결성되며 그 시작부터 헤비메탈을 지향하고, 외국곡만 연주하는 단계를 벗어나 스스로 만든 곡을 연주하기로 합의했다. 그리고 가을에 있을 대학가요제를 목표로 이대 앞의 연습실에서 하루 2시간씩 매일 연습하며 '해야', '알 수 없어', '이럴 수가 있을까' 등 9곡의 자작곡을 완성했다. 당시 같은 연습실을 썼던 밴드 가운데는 라이너스와 로커스트가 있다. 라이너스에서 베이스 기타를 연주했던 문영삼은 마그마 문영식의 친형이다. 라이너스의 독집 크레디트를 살펴보면 기타리스트에 김광현의 이름이 적혀있는데, 당시 상황과 무관하지 않아 보인다. 대학가요제 출전곡을 '해야'로 선택한 이유에 대해 조하문은 "당시 대학가요제는 조용한 분위기의 포크송 계열만 입상을 했는데, 그렇게 해서는 우리 마음에 차지도 않았고 입상을 위해 음악적 개성을 바꾼다는 게 싫었기 때문이다."라고 밝힌 바 있다. 일반적으로 볼 때 3은 완성의 숫자를 의미하기도 하지만, 그 중 하나만 제 위치를 잡지 못했을 때에는 쉽사리 그 균형이 깨어질 수 있는 위험을 안고 있는 숫자이기도 하다. 밴드 역시 기본편성이라고는 하지만 어느 한 멤버의 실력이 다른 멤버와 균형을 이루지 못한다면 '완성'은 이루어질 수 없다. 그런 점에서 볼 때, 마그마(의도하지는 않았겠지만 아이러니 하게도 그룹 이름도 3음절로 되어있다)가 3인조로 출발할 당시 자신들의 실력에 대한 자신감을 엿볼 수 있다. 1980년 MBC 대학 가요제의 시상식 장면 은상을 호명 받은 마그마가 다른 팀과는 대조적으로 고개를 푹 숙이고 단상으로 오르던 모습은 그때까지 그들 자신의 음악에 얼마나 자신감에 충만해 있는지를 단적으로 보여주는 한 예였다. 대학가요제에서의 은상 수상 이후 지상파 방송이나, 각 대학의 축제 등에서 이들의 모습을 어렵지 않게 볼 수 있었으나, 드럼을 맡고 있던 문영식의 도중하차는 그룹의 존속을 더 이상 어렵게 만들었다. 위에서 이야기했던 삼각형의 한 꼭지점의 자리 이탈이라고나 할까. 리더 조하문의 카리스마적 기질과 기타리스트 김광현의 개성이 충돌을 일으켰던 것 역시 밴드 해체의 이유가운데 커다란 부분을 차지했을 테고. 결국 1981년 말 MBC에서 주최했던 '독립 기념관 모금' 행사에 새로운 드러머와 함께 참여한 이후 국내 록 음악계에 있어서 더 이상 마그마라는 이름은 찾아보기 힘들었고, 조하문은 몇 년이 지난 후 솔로로 데뷔해서 '이 밤을 다시 한 번'의 스매시 히트와 함께 대중적으로 사랑 받는 '가수'로 거듭나게 된다. 대학가요제에서 일대 센세이션을 일으켰던 마그마의 유일한 음반을 살펴보자. 간결한 드럼 신호와 함께 확실한 라인의 리프로 포문을 여는 '알 수 없어', 다시 녹음된 대학가요제 입상곡 '해야'는 음반 발매와 함께 방송을 통해 어느 정도 에어플레이 됐던 트랙들이다. 이렇게 대표곡에서 들을 수 있는 마그마 특유의 사운드는 고등학교시절 프랑스에서 밴드 활동을 했던 기타리스트 김광현의 현란하지만 기본에 충실한 플레이와 '나이프 조'라는 별명을 가지고 있었던 조하문의 날카로운 보컬로 이전 대학가요제에서 볼 수 있었던 여타 캠퍼스 밴드들과 확실한 선을 그었다. 음반에서 가징 귀 기울여 들어야 하는 곡은 심야방송 '전영혁의 음악세계'를 통해서도 연말 순위에 오른 바 있는 '아름다운 곳'과 '잊혀진 사랑'이다. 느슨한 전개 속에서 청자를 잔뜩 긴장시키며 등장하는 '아름다운 곳'의 앙칼지고 도발적인 보컬은 분명 국내 록의 역사에 있어서 전대미문의 것이었다(이 곡 때문에 외국의 록 마니아 들은 마그마를 일본 밴드 플라워 트래블링 밴드Flower Travelling Band와 비교하기도 한다). 그런가 하면 '잊혀진 사랑'(원래 제목은 '4차원의 세계'였지만 심의에 걸려서 '잊혀진 사람'으로 제목이 바뀌었고, 음반이 발매될 당시 오타로 인해서 '잊혀진 사랑'으로 표기되었다.)의 점진적인 몰입은 전성기 종주국의 사이키델릭 밴드들에 비견될 만 하다. 한 마디로 거칠 것 없고 자신감 넘치던 당시 마그마의 모습을 그대로 담은 베스트 트랙들이다. 한동안 잊고 있었던 음반소개 재개합니다.ㅎㅎ 이번 소개하고자 하는 음반은 한국 그룹 사운드 앨범으로. 1980년 제4회 대학가요제에서 "해야"로 은상을 수상했던 캠퍼스 밴드 <마그마>의 셀프타이틀 데뷔 앨범입니다. 희한하게도 그룹의 리더였던 '조하문' 자신도 이 앨범을 가지고 있지 않다고 해서 화제였었던 기억이 나네요.^^ 이 앨범에서 특이했던 점은 자신들이 캠퍼스 밴드라는걸 강조하기 위한 것인지 앨범에 그룹 멤버들의 소속 대학과 학과를 표시하고 있습니다. 보통 그룹들이 발표하는 앨범들을 보면 대부분 자신이 맡은 파트를 쓰는데 말이지요.~
그룹 <마그마>는 리드보컬 연세대학교 지질학과생이던 '조하문'이 같은 대학 불문학과생이던 '김광현'과 의기투합하여 결성이 됩니다. '김광현'은 "라이너스"의 베이시스트인 '문영삼'의 동생인 서울대 경영학과생인 '문영식'을 영입하면서 <마그마>의 3인조 그룹 라인업을 완성합니다. 명문대생으로만 구성된 3인조 트리오라... 흐흠...

이들은 1980년 MBC대학가요제에 출전하여 "해야"로 대박을 터트립니다. 강력한 헤비사운드로 말이죠. 폭발적인 샤우팅과 현란한 일렉트릭 기타 연주, 사이키델릭한 분위기의 사운드가 어우러진 "해야"는 은상을 수상하게 되는데 여기에도 말이 많았다죠.. 그 해의 그랑프리는 연세대 의대생 듀오인 "이범용과 한명훈"의 "꿈의 대화"였습니다. <마그마(MAGMA)>의 데뷔앨범은 대학가요제 이듬해인 1981년에 출시가 됩니다. 하지만 이 앨범이 출시되자마자 고별앨범이 되었죠. 앨범 발표후 그룹은 해산되었기 때문입니다. 그룹의 리드보컬인 "조하문"은 1987년 솔로 데뷔 앨범을 내는데 앨범에는 "마그마 조하문"이라고 해서 출시합니다. 최대 히트곡인 "해야"도 물론 수록했구요. 사운드가 많이 변화되었긴 했지만요... 이후 솔로로 4집까지 앨범 내지만 1집만큼의 인기를 얻지는 못했죠...
개인적으로 볼 때 <마그마>의 앨범은 다양한 평가를 받고 있다고 생각됩니다. 1980년대의 출현한 한국의 전설적 밴드로 회자되고 있고 한국에서 최초의 Hard Rock Album으로 평가받기도 하며, 한국 대중음악 100대 명반에도 선정되었죠. 구입한 CD는 2004년 리버맨뮤직이라는 음반사에서 출시한 것인데 CD 포장비닐 안에는 일본에서 유행했던 간지 같은게 있었는데 거기에도 영문으로 그에 대한 내용이 수록되어 있습니다. 이들이 앨범을 출시하게 된 사연도 참 재밌더군요. 대학가요제에서 강력한 헤비 사운드와 폭발적인 고음 샤우팅 창법, 신들린 기타연주 구성된 <해야>로 관객들을 열광의 도가니로 몰아 넣은 것은 물론, 청년층에게 폭발적인 인기를 얻었다고 합니다. 수많은 공중파 방송에 출연하여 대중적인 인지도는 얻었지만 멤버들중 2명은 졸업 후엔 직업 가수로 활동할 생각이 없었답니다. 다만 졸업하기 전에 기념으로 음반을 남기자고 멤버들끼리 합의했었다는군요. 그 결과가 힛트레코드사에서 발매된 마그마 1집, 바로 이 앨범입니다.

The college song jury awarded a silver medal for this extraordinary song, and the following year Magma released a regular album with many concerns and expectations.
The released album did not disappoint the expectations of many music enthusiasts who listened to ‘야’. He made all the songs in the album except one, leading the direction of the album, and his intense shouting technique was unsurprising if he placed him at the top of the genealogy of Korean heavy metal vocals.
In addition, guitarist Kim Kwang-hyun played the sound with the effect of hard rock and psychedelic, using the appropriate effects. 'Beautiful Place', which combines all the energy of magma, including Jo Ha-moon's exceptional shouting and Kim Kwang-hyun's intense guitar performance, is enough to be evaluated as the filial piety of Korean heavy metal. 'Forgotten Love' is a masterpiece of Korean rock history.
In addition, Kim Gwang-hyun's psychedelic performance was comparable to Kim Soo-chul's “Dark World,” as he ridiculed the “light music” label next to the title.
Magma dismantled after this one album, and after a while, Jo Ha-moon began his career as a solo singer, singing 'this night again' and 'snowy night'. And now, even longer, Jo Ha-moon is a pastor. He may now live with the greatest value and meaning of life in preaching the words of Jesus Christ, but this amazing piece of music that he played as a young man was also called “The Gospel of Rock,” which has great meaning in Korean pop music history.
