Tracks with * I consider essential listens or classics from a western point of view of listening, as tracks to check out for sure because they seem to stand out as such. This makes them also very suitable for western radio show airplay. Tracks that are only underlined can be considered fine tracks you might better check out as well, but I am not sure how essential they really are. If accepting dark trot most tracks will still do fine.
"On the first few tracks of this compilation, which is more mainstream with string orchestral background and pop/rock band, I got the impression that this singer, with a good deep breathy voice quality, sounded at times just a bit more like a bigger public singer, performing with an enjoyable, calm, a slightly melodramatic singing.
These first couple of songs are accompanied by full string orchestra, electric guitar and organ/keyboards, hardly audible drums and electric bass.
From the fourth track onwards the 'rock' band has found its own place showing nice organ / analogue keyboards, more audible drumming, some small, but talented contributions of psych electric guitar accents, and there is also more direction toward singing what are supposed to be a bit more rock orientated songs, still carefully forwarded to the same public.
Completely the opposite to the fourth rocker is the fifth track, which sounds more like a nationalist hymn in communist style with full vocal group singing with dramatic “musical” stage setting effect and with a local brass band accompanying, and of course enforced rolling of the flags and drums. Not sure what a song like this is doing here ?
Then the sixth song seems to hold the strange middle between a sad inspiration and light entertainment with psych details and rock accents with fuzz and organ, mixed with a few moody erotic saxophone solos, and bar drums. The 7th song is again a rockier song again with the same rock band (and some sax solos). The eight track has a light surf guitar intro, is a light pop/rocker. The ninth track with the same rock band and with a softly rocking song shows nice organ arrangements, and is an interesting tune. The next soft pop/rocker with attractive tune has good keyboards/electric guitar. I wonder who this band and the guitarists were.
The tune last track with two keyboards sounds a bit more popular, with half of the tune in louder public teasing hand-waving melodrama, with fitting organ arrangements, another part in a lower sadder voice."

Then suddenly, on "Overnight" the band slightly transforms it further into something else, adding more emotion to it too. The only really lost song after that is the war song "Gunga" with harmony singing and marching drums and flutes. A second rockier moment (also in the singing) can be heard on "Come Back." "Once" is a classic song, here with a fine version. Also "Samdol's First Love" has a power and is into the more progressive territory of pop. "Loving Hearts" is there s well, a softer song, with the better band sound. All-in-all, the album has really fine elements to discover"

한국전쟁이 발발한 나흘 뒤인 1950년 6월 29일 태어난 '솔(Soul) 음악의 대모' 임희숙. 올해로 65세가 된 그는 젊어 보인다는 인사에 "제가 오늘 화장을 좀 잘했나 봐요"라며 특유의 화통한 목소리로 이렇게 말했다.
올해로 데뷔 49주년을 맞은 그는 지난 5일 신곡 '어떻게 좀 해봐'를 내고 의욕적으로 팬들 앞에 섰다.
지난 2001년 35주년 재즈 앨범을 낸 뒤 몇 장의 음반을 냈지만 제대로 된 가요 신곡은 15년가량 된 것 같다고 더듬었다.
최근 용산구 이태원동에서 만난 그는 "왜 이렇게 뜸했느냐"는 물음에 "간간이 방송을 했을 뿐, 노래를 한 번도 쉰 적이 없다"고 강조했다.
"가수는 날마다 노래하고 싶죠. 힘이 들어도 그게 로망이고 꿈이에요. 노래할 무대가 줄어들면서 6년 전에 이태원에 라이브 카페를 차려 이곳에서 날마다 노래를 해요. 무대에 오를 때면 지금도 긴장 되고요. 다행히 히트곡을 팬들이 외면하지 않아 행복한 가수죠."
그는 인터뷰 중간 중간 히트곡 '내 하나의 사람은 가고', '진정 난 몰랐네' 등 노래 제목이 나올 때마다 몇 소절씩 라이브로 들려줬다. '국보급' 중저음과 허스키한 음색, 큰 포물선을 그리는 바이브레이션은 여전히 콧등을 시큰하게 했다.
자신의 지난 인생과 부모님 얘기를 할 때는 "오늘 왜 이러냐"고 혼잣말하며 손수건을 꺼내 눈물을 훔치기도 했다. 한국전쟁 당시 아버지의 행방불명과 두 번의 이혼, 억울하게 휘말린 대마초 파동과 방송 중단, 음독자살 기도에 이어 몇 년 전 척추 수술까지 그는 한 마디로 팔자가 '셌다'.
반세기 동안 노래하며 몇 겹의 딱지가 앉았는지 그는 "지금이 너무 행복하다"고 했다. 휴대 전화에 담아둔 부모님 사진을 보며 절로 미소 지었고, 장시간 인터뷰가 끝나고는 "가슴이 후련하다"고 말했다.
◇ 태진아가 헌정한 음반…"예전 곡도 오리지널 키로 불러"
음반을 내는데 도움을 준 건 후배 가수 태진아였다.
윤시내, 최백호, 이동원의 히트곡을 쓴 작곡가 최종혁으로부터 '어떻게 좀 해봐'란 노래를 선물 받은 임희숙은 태진아를 찾아가 상의했다. 태진아는 "누님, 제가 싱글음반 하나 헌정할게요"라며 힘을 실어줬다.
임희숙은 "진아가 데뷔 음반 녹음할 때도 놀러 가고 수십 년 지기"라며 "윤항기 씨에 이어 내 음반까지 내줘 휴머니즘이 있는 후배"라고 치켜세웠다.
그간 솔과 재즈, 가스펠부터 트로트까지 흑인 감성의 음악과 가요를 넘나든 그의 신곡 '어떻게 좀 해봐'는 솔에 '뽕끼'를 가미한 솔 트로트곡이다.
가사에는 '어떻게 좀 해봐 비뚤어진 지금 흔들리는 세상…씨 뿌리고 가꾼 만큼 잘사는 그런 세상 만들어봐' 등 힘을 내 좋은 세상을 만들어 가자는 희망적인 메시지가 담겼다.
"제가 트로트를 부른 건 1970년대 '잊었을거예요'가 처음으로 1980년대에도 트로트 록 '상처'를 선보였죠. 전 트로트를 좋아해요. 제 슬픈 노래가 따라부르기 어렵다던데 신곡은 저도 녹음실서 연습 한 번에 녹음할 정도로 대중적이고 희망적이죠. 마술사 복장으로 무대에 오르는데 이 아이디어도 진아가 냈어요."
그는 여전히 예전 곡들도 '오리지널 키'로 부른다. 고음에선 되레 청아한 소리가 나오기도 하고 중저음에선 온몸을 울리는 풍성한 성량이 퍼져 나와 '절창'을 이룬다.
9년 전쯤 호주 공연을 갔다가 에스컬레이터에서 넘어져 허리를 다친 그는 결국 2011년 척추에 철심을 박는 수술을 했다며 "그때 무릎을 꿇고 기도할 수 있고 고음만 올라가면 된다고 생각했다"고 말했다.
그는 소리는 때론 발바닥에서 때론 아랫배에서 온몸을 통해 나오므로 가수의 살아온 인생, 건강 상태까지 가늠할 수 있다며 "한의 소리가 나오려면 예술가는 때론 가난해야 한다"고 인생 이야기를 들려줬다.
◇ '삶의 무게'에 눌린 인생…"노래는 소리로 세상에 내놓은 자식"
태어난 순간부터 임희숙의 앞날에는 고생문이 열려 있었다. 출생 얼마 뒤 대한청년단 소속이던 아버지가 납치돼 생사를 알 길이 없었고, 3살 위 언니는 먹을 게 없어 굶어 죽었다. 어머니는 재가해 두 남동생을 낳았는데 영화 '개 같은 날의 오후'로 유명한 이민용 감독이 그중 한 명이다.
아버지의 젊은 날 흑백 사진을 보여준 그는 "한 번도 뵌 적이 없지만 내 옆 얼굴이 딱 아버지를 닮았다"며 "악기를 5개나 다루셨다고 한다. 그래도 노래 재능은 엄마를 닮은 것 같다"고 말했다.
가수의 길을 반대해 딸의 머리카락까지 자른 어머니는 고집을 꺾지 못하고 '목포의 눈물'을 작곡한 손목인 선생에게 딸을 데리고 갔다. "'솔의 대부' 샘 쿡을 통해 솔 음악의 진정성을 깨달았고 나애심, 최희준은 나의 롤 모델이었다"고 한다.

워커힐 무대에 1년간 출연한 뒤엔 미8군 쇼로 옮겨갔다. '봄비'의 박인수와 함께 걸출한 솔 보컬로 호평받았다.
그는 "고교 2학년 때부터 엄청 바빠졌으니 공부와의 인연은 고 1때 끝났다"며 "한양대 연극영화과 1학년 중퇴로 나오는데, 그때 필기시험을 본 뒤 스케줄로 인해 실기시험에 늦게 가 아예 보질 못했다. 그러니 잘못된 정보"라고 이 사실을 처음 정정했다.
