해방 이후 미군을 통해 급속하게 유입된 서구의 대중음악 장르가 대중에게 각광받기 시작한 시기는 1960년대의 일이다. 그때, 당시로서는 뉴 웨이브라 할 수 있는 록, 포크, 스탠더드 팝, 재즈 등

다양한 장르가 주류 장르인 트로트과 공존하며 대중음악의 부흥기가 처음으로 생성되었다.

그런 점에서 1964년은 대중음악사적으로 중요한 해다. 이미자의 '동백아가씨'로 대변되는 트로트의 견고한 아성에 한명숙, 최희준, 패티김 등 미8군 가수들의 스탠더드 팝과 국내 최초로 밴드앨범을 발표한 <키보이스>와 창작 록 앨범을 발표한 <에드훠>, 그리고 최초의 남성 4인조 컨트리 포크 그룹 <아리랑 브라더스>가 그 해에 동시다발적으로 등장했다. 견고했던 트로트의 아성은 이들의 협공에 휘청거렸고 대학가에서는 통기타 소리가 울려 퍼지기 시작했다. 포크 대중화에 결정적인 공헌을 한 수훈갑은 1968년에 등장한 최초의 남성 포크 듀오 <트윈 폴리오>다. 그러나 번안 곡의 범주에 머물렀기에 진정한 한국 모던 포크의 시작은 1968년에 귀국한 한대수로부터 시작되었다고 해도 과언은 아닐 것이다. 트윈폴리오와 한대수의 등장에 4년 앞서 국내 최초로 통기타 음반을 발표한 그룹이 있었다. 남성 4인조 그룹 <아리랑 브라더스>다. 팀의 음악리더 서수남은 1962년 <국풍81>의 원조 격인 <5ㆍ16 군사혁명 1주년기념 콩쿨대회>에 참가해 차석인 1등에 입상했다. 대상은 남성4중창단 쟈니 브라더스에게 돌아갔다. 당시 MBC의 주최로 열린 이 대회는 지금은 철거되어 사라진 동대문운동장에서 수만 명의 인파가 운집된 가운데 성대하게 열렸다. 이 대회에 출전한 한양대생 서수남, 중앙대생 하청일, 대한합창단원 박창학, 서울음대생 최용삼은

단숨에 의기투합해 당대의 트렌드였던 남성 4중창단을 결성했다.

연습 과정에서 최용삼과 박창학이 팀을 탈퇴하고 성악가 석우장과 천정팔로 교체된 이들은

외국의 포크송을 번안해 국내 최초로 통기타 음반을 발표한 한국 포크의 선구자들이다.

하청일의 음악 친구였던 녹음보조기사 이강은 통기타와 하모니카를 연주하며 멋들어진 화음을 구사한 이들을

대도레코드 녹음기사인 친형 이청에게 소개했다.

음반사 창립의 꿈을 키우고 있었던 이청은 낮에는 녹음기사로 일하고 모든 직원이 퇴근한 밤에 멤버들을

마장동 스튜디오로 불러 도둑질하듯 한 달간 녹음작업을 강행했다.

서수남은 팝송을 번안하고 편곡과 통기타 연주를 맡았고 하청일은 바리톤, 천장팔은 베이스와 스니어 드럼, 석우장은 콘트라베이스와 테너 파트를 맡았다. 1964년 LA SCALA 레코드사를 창립한 이청의 제안에 따라 팀명은 한국정서를 담은

<아리랑 브라더스>로 정해졌고, 최초의 컨트리 포크앨범인 <아리랑 브라더스>의 독집

500장은 세상에 빛을 보았다. 우선 홍보용 음반 200장이 언론과 가요 관계자들에게 배포되었다. 타이틀곡 <우리 애인 미스 얌체>등

총 14곡의 수록곡들이 라디오 전파를 타고 흘러나갔다. AFKN을 즐겨 듣던 학생들은 귀에 익은

외국 포크송이 우리말로 흘러나오자 귀를 의심했다. 이에 '묘한 노래가 나왔다'는 소문이 퍼져나갔다.

수록곡 중 최대히트곡은 <동물농장> <웃어주세요(도미니크)>.

음반을 찾는 이들이 급증하자 3개월 만에 타이틀곡을 <동물농장>으로 변경해

300여장의 재판이 추가로 발매되었다. 1년 정도 활동했던 아리랑 브라더스는 워커힐 쇼 오디션 때 파국을 맞이했다.

쇼 매니저가 기형적으로 키가 큰 리더 서수남이 못마땅해 '키 큰 친구만 뺀다면 출연시키겠다'는

비밀제의를 나머지 멤버들에게 했던 것이다. 이후 아리랑 브라더스의 음반은 수십 년 동안 존재조차 완벽하게 지워졌었다.

원로가수 현인의 딸이자 KBS성우였던 현혜정과 결혼해 혼성듀엣까지 결성했던 서수남이

한 달 만에 파경을 맞아 홧김에 모든 음반과 자료들을 불태워 버렸기 때문.

오랜 세월이 지나 한 고물상에서 발견된 <아리랑 브라더스>의 데뷔앨범은

명곡 <동물농장>의 최초 버전이 수록된 국내 최초의 통기타 앨범이다.
