An interesting prog band which had a CD reissue of the 1988 LP 동서남북 1집 - 아주 오랜 기억과의 조우 on Si-Wan in 1998 (now sold out) and a Korean LP reissue of the 1981 LP 동서남북 N.E.W.S. - 나비 The Butterfly in 2016. They are still on my want-list.

This great track holds an art balance between soft hard rock and prog. This kind of music was rarely found and made in Korea. For its genre this was a successful performance. Recommended to prog lovers to check out.

며칠 전의 일이었다. 집 근처의 편의점에 잠시 들렀다가 오는 길에 앞서 가던 두 명의 남자 대학생 중 하나가 특이한 행동을 해서 내 시선을 사로 잡는 일이 있었다. 친구와 함께 도란도란 이야기를 나누며 걷던 그 친구가 갑자기 멈춰서는가 싶더니 주위를 전혀 의식하지 않고 허리를 구십도 가까이 숙여 동서남북 네 방향을 향해 한번씩 정중하게 인사를 했던 것이다. 입학철인 요즘에 멀쩡하게 잘 걸어가던 대학생이 갑자기 멈춰서서 그 같은 행동을 하게 되면 나 뿐만 아니라 누구라도 '신입생 신고식인가?'라는 생각을 하게 될 것은 자명한 일일 것이다. 그런데 내용을 알고 보니 그 친구의 그런 행동은 신고식이 아니었다. 네 방향을 향해 한번씩 고개를 숙였던 그 친구가 고개를 들고 막 친구에게 무언가를 이야기 할 때쯤 그 곁을 스쳐 지나가던 내 귀에 이런 말이 들려 왔던 것이다. '이렇게 하면 딸국질이 멈춘데, xxx 에게 배웠어' 그랬다. 그 친구는 어처구니없게도 딸국질을 멈추게 하는 방법을 함께 걷던 친구에게 행동으로 몸소 보여 주고 있었던 것이다. 그 이야기를 듣자 갑자기 피식하고 웃음이 흘러 나왔다. 효과는 모르겠지만 딸국질을 멈추게 하는 새롭고 기상천외한 방법이 또 하나 나왔나 보다라는 생각이 들었기 때문이다. 그래서 딸국질과 동서남북을 함께 넣어서 검색을 해봤다. 그랬더니 재미있게도 길에서 봤던 것과 비슷한 방법이 사람들 사이에서 이미 공유되고 있었다. 동서남북 네 방향에 물 한잔씩을 떠놓고 동쪽에서 부터 북쪽 까지 차례대로 돌아가면서 그 물을 마신 후 각기 '동', '서', '남', '북'이라고 외치면 딸국질이 멈춘다는 것이다. 딸국질이 얼마나 고통스러웠으면 그 같은 방법 까지 등장했을까 싶기도 한데 이런 방법으로 효과를 보는 이도 있으니 단순히 웃어 넘길일만은 아닌 듯 하다. 하여튼 그렇게 딸국질과 동서남북을 생각하며 웃다 보니 문득 또 다른 동서남북이 떠올랐다. 2007년 8월 23일에 발표된 <한국 대중음악 100대 명반>의 마지막 끄트머리인 100위에 자신들의 유일한 음반인 <아주 오랜 기억과의 조우>를 올려 놓은 대한민국 록 밴드 <동서남북>이 바로 그 주인공이다. 서울특별시 마포구 연남동에 위치한 사립 고등학교인 경성 고등학교를 졸업하고 고려대와 국민대를 다니고 있던 동창생인 <박호준>과 <이태열>은 1980년에 음악의 다양화를 요구하는 대중들의 기대에 부응하기 위한 새로운 밴드 결성을 시작하게 된다. <핑크 플로이드(Pink Floyd)>와 <킹 크림슨(King Crimson)>, 그리고 <넥타(Nektar)>와 같은 진보적인 성향의 록 음악을 들려주는 밴드를 결성하기로 하고 구성원들을 끌어 모으기 시작했던 것이다. 가장 먼저 박호준의 고대 동기인 <이동훈>이 여기에 동의하고 합류했으며 뒤를 이어서 서울대를 다니고 있던 <김득권>과 청주대의 <이관형>이 합류하면서 밴드의 틀이 갖춰지기 시작했다. 그리고 여기에 명지대의 <김광민>과 <김준응>이 합류함으로써 마침내 7인조 밴드가 완성되었다. 그런데 밴드가 완성된 후 구성원 각자가 좋아하는 밴드들을 취합해보니 뜻밖에도 모든 구성원들이 소프트 록 밴드인 <브레드(Bread)>를 공통적으로 좋아하는 것으로 나타났다. 출처: https://wivern.tistory.com/2657 [좋은 만남, 좋은 음악 Art Rock]
Korean rock band East-West-North-South were graduates from Kyungsung High School, a private high school located in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul. They had decided to form a band with progressive rock music influenced by groups such as Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and Nektar, and began to attract members for it.
First of all, Park Ho-joon's ancient motives, Lee Dong-hoon, agreed and joined, followed by Kim Deuk-kwon, who was attending Seoul National University, and Lee Kwan-hyung of Cheongju University, where the band's framework began to be established. Myung Ji-dae's Kim Kwang-min and Kim Joon-eun finally joined the seven-member band. However, after the band was completed, each member's favorite bands were gathered, and surprisingly, all members showed that they liked the soft rock band Bread.
바로 이러한 점이 진보적인 성향의 기본 틀과 맞물리면서 한국 대중음악 100대 명반 중 한장이 탄생하게 되는 것이다. 하지만 그 과정은 결코 순조롭지 않았다. 주머니가 가벼운 대학생 신분의 구성원들로 이루어진 밴드였기에 한국 대중 음악계에 진보적인 신선한 흐름을 유입시키려던 그들의 계획은 출발 무터 고난의 연속이었던 것이다. 학업과 음악을 병행하기 위해 <양병집>이 운영하던 라이브 카페 <모노(Mono)>에 고정 출연하며 고군분투하던 그들에게 길을 열어준 것은 다름아닌 가게 사장인 양병집이었다. 양병집의 후원과 기획으로 마침내 동서남북의 데뷔 음반이 녹음되기 시작한 것이다. 하지만 그 마저도 그리 넉넉한 형편이 아니었기에 녹음실 사용시간을 최대한으로 줄여야 했고 사용 장비도 최소화해야만 했다. 결국 이런 악조건 속에서 하드 록과 사이키델릭 록, 그리고 프로그레시브 록 성향의 음악 까지 공존하는 동서남북의 데뷔 음반은 1980년에 2채널로 세시간 삼십분만에 녹음되어 완성되었다. 하지만 이듬해인 1981년에 <N.E.W.S.>라는 제목으로 서라벌 레코드에서 발매된 음반은 그리 주목받지 못했다. 음반 발표 후 텔레비전 출연과 1981년 5월 28일부터 6월 1일까지 5일간 서울특별시 여의도에서 열렸던 대규모의 문화 축제로 한국신문협회가 주최하고 한국방송공사가 주관했었던<국풍 81>에도 출연했었지만 음반에 대한 반응은 미미했던 것이다. 결국 구성원들 사이에 음악적인 이견이 발생하게 되고 이는 밴드의 해체로 이어지게 된다. 동서남북은 결성된지 2년만인 1982년에 그렇게 조용히 사방으로 사라져 갔다. 그런데 진보적인 밴드의 숙명이라고 해야할까? 밴드가 해산되고 난 후 동서남북의 유일한 음반이 골수 애호가들을 중심으로 재평가 작업이 활발히 이루어지기 시작했다. 그리고 이런 물밑 움직임은 음반사를 자극했고 결국 1988년에 <예음 레코드>를 통해서 <아주 오랜 기억과의 조우>라는 제목으로 동서남북의 유일한 음반은 극적으로 재발매되기에 이른다. 우리나라 최초의 본격적인 프로그레시브 록 음악이라고 평가받는 곡인 <나비 (Extended Version)>는 그렇게 해서 좀더 많은 사람들에게 알려지게 되었으며 상당항 반향을 불러 일으켰었다. 사실 음반에 수록된 곡들을 들어 보면 <나비>를 길게 확장 편곡한 곡인 <나비 (Extended Version)>를 제외한 다른 곡들은 프로그레시브 록과는 조금 거리가 있는 곡들이라고 할 수 있다. 그보다는 히트 곡인 <하나가 되어요>에서 알 수 있듯이 동서남북의 음악은 활력 넘치는 풋풋한 대학 그룹 사운드라고 보는 편이 더 정확하기 때문이다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 동서남북의 유일한 음반에 수록된 음악들은 다소 치기어린 부분을 제외하면 분명 신선하며 실험적인 음악이라고 할 수 있다. 하드 록과 블루스, 그리고 사이키델릭과 재즈 등을 넘나드는 동서남북의 음악이 분명 당시로서는 획기적인 음악이었기 때문이다. 물론 여러가지 생각을 하게 만드는 가사와 극적인 구성, 그리고 몽환적으로 펼쳐지는 연주가 압권인 <나비 (Extended Version)>가 단연 으뜸임은 두 말할 필요가 없다. This is in line with the basic framework of progressive inclinations, creating one of the top 100 Korean pop songs. But the process was never smooth. Since the band was made up of members of a lightweight college student group, their plan to introduce a progressive fresh stream into the Korean pop music industry was a continuation of the starter's hardship. It was Yang Byung-bak, the owner of the shop, who appeared in a live cafe called Mono, operated by Yang-Yang-Bae, to struggle with both studies and music.
With the support and planning of both albums, the debut albums of east, west, north and north finally began to be recorded. They had to reduce the recording studio's time to the maximum and minimize of the equipment used. In the end, under the same bad conditions, hard rock, psychedelic rock, and progressive rock music co-existed, and their debut album was recorded in 1980 in two channels in three hours and thirty minutes.
In the following year, the album released on Seorabul Record in 1981 under the title <N.E.W.S.> did not received much attention. After the release of the album, they appeared on television and on May 28, 1981, and June 1, 1981, it was a large-scale cultural festival held in Yeouido, Seoul. The response was minimal. As a result, musical disagreement arises among the members, which leads to the disbanding of the band.
North, south, east and west disappeared silently in 1982, two years after it was formed. But is it the typical fate of a progressive band? After the band was disbanded, re-evaluation of the only record in the north, south, west, and north was centered around some music lovers. A subterranean movement stimulated the record label, and in 1988, the only record in East, North, South, North and South was re-released dramatically under the title <Encounter with very long memories> through <Preparation Record>.
The Extended Version, which is regarded as Korea's first full-fledged progressive rock music, was thus known to more people and caused considerable repercussions. In fact, if you listen to the songs on the record, you can say that the songs are far from progressive rock except for the extended version, which is an extended arrangement of (Iron?) Butterfly. Rather, as we can see from the hit song "Becoming One," it is more accurate to see the music of East, West, North and North as a lively, fresh college group sound.
Nevertheless, the music recorded in the only record of the east, west, north and south is obviously fresh and experimental music except for the somewhat incongruous part. This is because music from the east, west, north and south, which crosses hard rock and blues, and psychedelic and jazz, was definitely a breakthrough at the time. Of course, the lyrics, the dramatic composition, and the fantastic performance of the extended version, Butterfly (Extended Version), are by far the best.
