바블껌 - Bubble Gum
This is a rather nice reissue of acoustic songs with harmony vocals. The first six tracks have orchestrations too. Especially the first track is well worked out with nice melodic strings and string plucks, and some flute. On the second track we hear a trumpet solo, on the sixth track some additional clarinet. The guitars, mostly two acoustic guitars, are mostly used to play happy rhythms. The vocal harmonies, even when the male or female singer is leading are done very well. There’s a beautiful innocence in the songs, never becoming too mellow with it, which makes this recording pretty good. On the last eight tracks the vocalists are accompanied by two acoustic guitars only, which on the last few tracks sound a bit demo-like, in a good sense because we have the basic songs expressed just the way that they sound best. The ninth and tenth track have also some yodelling (?!) part.
A nice, innocent folk-pop album worth tracing.
With an almost flower-power-like flavor, these harmony vocals folk songs with acoustic guitars are worth hearing, making it an album worth tracing.

971년 결성된 혼성 듀엣 <바블껌>의 이름을 기억하는 대중은 많지 않을 것 같다. 이규대, 조연구로 구성된 <바블껌>은 70-80년대 청소년들이 가장 애창했던 캠프 송의 명곡들인 ‘연가’, ‘짝사랑’, ‘토요일 밤에(첫 버전은 목요일 밤에)’를 최초로 노래했던 인기 듀엣이었다. 캠프송의 지존이었던 <바블껌>은 음악활동을 통해 결혼에 골인한 혼성듀엣이다. 이들의 막내딸 이자람은 어린 시절 ‘예솔이’란 이름으로 유명한 꼬마가수였고 18세 때 판소리 심청전 여덟 마당을 완창했고 사상 최연소 최장공연 기록으로 기네스북에 오른 천재 소리꾼이다.

'연가' 첫 수록… '짝사랑' 발표때마다 작곡자 혼선
예상치 못한 뜨거운 반응을 이끌어낸 청평페스티발 공연 후 <바블껌>의 리더 이규대는 아마추어 노래 콘테스트에 출천해 1등을 차지했다. 하루 개런티 500원의 무명가수로 명동 '꽃다방'에 출연을 시작한 이후 조연구와 함께 무대에서 노래를 부르던 어느 날, 청평 페스티발 사회자 정홍택이 연락을 했다. 당시 그는 대학체육회관 빌딩 2층에 라이브 클럽 '오비라운지'를 오픈했었기 때문. 매니저를 자청한 정홍택은 '오리엔탈', '코리엔탈'등 합성어로 이들의 팀명을 생각하다 "동요 같고 예쁜 곡을 부르는 혼성듀엣이니 풍선껌이란 이름이 좋겠다"며 팀 이름을 <바블껌>으로 지어주었다.
DJ 박원웅과 정식 계약
하지만 정식 매니저 계약은 당대의 유명 DJ 박원웅과 맺었다. <바블껌>과 함께 이규대가 소속한 배재고 출신 남성사중창단 <마일스톤>도 함께 마장동 스튜디오에서 녹음을 해 1972년 1월 데뷔 음반을 냈다.

1971년 리리시스터즈에 의해 먼저 발표된 '짝사랑'은 곡 발표 때마다 작곡자가 바뀌는 사연 많았던 곡이다. 이규대는 이 곡에 대해 "당시 대학가에는 이름도 없이 떠돌아다니던 곡이 많았다. '짝사랑'은 1969년에 Y 대학서클인 부족사회의 선배 김욱이 산행 다니던 시절에 만들었던 노래"라고 전한다.
<바블껌>은 박원웅과 인연을 맺은 후 조선호텔 뒤 라이브 클럽 <포시즌>을 주 무대로 삼았다. 그때 그들의 앞 순서에 노래한 가수가 이연실이다. 이규대는 "이연실과는 동갑이어서 금방 친구가 되었지만 자신의 독집제작 때 곡이 모자라자 우리가 포시즌에서 불렀던 '손꼽동네 새색시'를 '9살 새색시가 시집을 간다'고 가사를 고치고 '새색시 시집가네'로 제목을 변경하며 발표해 많이 싸웠다. 당시 처남과 같은 홍대 미대생이고 친한 사이라 그냥 넘어갔는데 작사작곡자도 틀리게 발표해 혼란이 빚어졌다. 원 작곡자는 약수동 장로교회 성가대 지휘자 김신일"이라고 전한다. 이스라엘 국가인 '비야 비야'는 원래 동요 '꼬부랑 할머니'를 쓴 신일고 교사 한태균이 가사를 썼다. '마당쇠 이야기'도 남성듀엣 <쉐그린>의 코믹 포크송 '얼간이 짝사랑'의 오리지널 버전이다.
이규대 결혼후 활동 접어
1974년 10월 9일 이규대는 여성멤버 조연구와 조선일보 뒤 덕수교회에서 정식 결혼식을 올렸다. 그 때문에 <바블껌>은 사실상 활동을 접었고 이장호 감독의 동생 이영호와 <외침과 속삭임>이란 남성듀엣을 결성해 잠시 활동을 했다. 이후 이규대는 전업 사회자로 변신했다. 당시 그가 주도했던 라이브클럽 <코러스>는 모르는 남녀들에게 자연스런 만남을 유도하는 '껀수의 전당'으로 불리며 대단히 인기를 끌었던 새로운 문화공간으로 각광받았다. 훗날 가수로 데뷔해 히트곡을 터뜨렸던 <코러스>의 DJ 이재민은 춤을 추면서 재미난 멘트를 날려 인기가 높았다.
다운타운 최고의 스타 진행자가 되었지만 노래에 대한 갈증 때문에 다시 곡을 쓰기 시작했다. 하지만 대마초 파동을 겪은 이후 자격지심에 모든 곡을 아내 조연구 이름으로 발표했다. 첫 작품은 남성듀엣 <가람과 뫼>의 음반이고 두 번째는 1979년 코러스 손님인 경기대생 한승기에게 만들어준 2회 TBC 젊은이가요제 대상 곡 '탑돌이'. 그리고 신인가수 장애향을 통해 '석탑'을 발표하며 연타석 히트를 터트렸다.
1982년부터 방송작가로 변신한 그가 MBC 작가시절 발표한 창작곡 '탑돌이', '석탑'등은 그가 꿈꿨던 한국적 이미지의 노래들이다. 그 결과 큰 딸 이윤아는 서울대 국악과에서 작곡을, 막내 이자람은 국악과에서 판소리를 전공하게 된 자양분이 되었다.

YMCA의 Y코러스 합창단에서 시작된 바블껌
혼성듀엣 바블껌과 4인조 남성 포크그룹 마일스톤의 공동 데뷔음반은 전설적인 1970년대 희귀 포크가요 LP이다. 여러 히트곡을 보유하고 있는 바블껌을 기억하는 대중은 많겠지만 마일스톤의 팀명은 생소할 것 같다. 두 팀은 모두 국악인 이자람의 아버지인 포크가수 이규대가 음악적 중심을 이룬 그룹이라는 공통점이 있다.
이규대, 조연구가 결성한 바블껌은 1970~1980년대 청년세대들이 애창했던 캠프송 <연가>, <짝사랑>, <토요일 밤에>(첫 버전은 목요일 밤에)를 최초로 노래했던 당대의 인기 듀엣이었다.
고등학교 남성사중창단 마일스톤
4인조 포크그룹 마일스톤은 고등학생 포크 사중창단으로 출발했다. 1967년 배재고 1학년생 이규대는 진명여고 3·1당 강당에서 열린 ‘문학의 밤’에 놀러갔다. 그곳에서 중동고 포크 트리오의 환상적인 화음에 감명을 받은 후에 학교 친구들과 사중창단을 결성했다. 1학년 7반 담임교사 이봉준의 허락 하에 결성했던 첫 팀 이름은 ‘소년의 목소리’란 뜻을 담은 ‘보이스 보이스’였다. 오리지널 멤버는 하이 테너 이규대, 테너 홍선표(후일 닉스 청바지 제작자), 바리톤 김청배(시인 김현승의 막내아들), 베이스 이태영(연세대 대기공학과 교수 역임)이었다. 이들은 매일 학교 음악실에 모여 찬송가 위주로 노래를 연습했다.
당시 이화여대생 6명이 결성한 여성 복삼중창단 엔담트리오(‘에워싼 담’이란 뜻)가 활동을 하고 있었지만, 남자 고교생들이 통기타를 치면서 노래한 이들도 학생들 사이에서 입소문을 타며 알려졌다.
우연하게 이뤄진 바블껌의 데뷔무대72
숭실대에 진학한 이규대는 YMCA에서 서클활동을 계속했다. 바블껌의 히트곡 <연가>, <짝사랑>등은 대학Y 연합서클인 ‘부족사회’ 시절에 만든 노래들이다. 자연스럽게 노래연습을 시작했던 두 사람은 이수만을 따라 청평 페스티발에 놀러가 예정에도 없이 무대에 올랐다. 팀 이름도 없이 Y코러스 시절에 즐겨 불렀던 샹송 번안곡 <아빠는 엄마만 좋아해>와 뉴질랜드 민요 <연가>를 불러 예상치 못한 박수 세례를 받았다.
청평 페스티발 때 이들에게 관심을 보였던 사회자 정홍택(당시 주간한국 연예담당 기자)이 “동요 같고 예쁜 곡을 부르는 혼성듀엣이니 ‘풍선껌’이란 상큼한 이름이 좋겠다.”며 팀 이름을 ‘바블껌’으로 지어줬다. 이후 DJ 박원웅과 매니저 계약을 맺은 두 사람은 데뷔음반 취입기회를 얻었다.
바블껌과 마일스톤의 공동 데뷔 음반
이규대의 주선으로 바블껌과 마일스톤의 데뷔음반 취입은 서울 마장동 스튜디오에서 함께 진행했다. 1972년 1월 오아시스레코드에서 스플리트 앨범으로 제작된 이 음반의 재킷은 이규대의 처남인 홍익대 미대 출신 조승구가 디자인했다. 앨범에는 총 11곡이 수록되었는데 A면에는 바블껌의 노래 6곡, B면에는 마일스톤의 노래 5곡이 담겼다.
혼성듀엣 바블껌의 수록곡 중 카테리나 발렌테의 를 번안한 타이틀곡 <아빠는 엄마만 좋아해>와 <짝사랑>, <목요일 밤> 등 여러 곡이 학생층에 널리 사랑받았다. 리더 이규대는 필자와의 인터뷰를 통해 “<목요일 밤에>는 숭실대 학생이었던 유수연(숭실대 사회사업과 교수 역임)이 조성욱에게 배워서 알게 된 곡”이라고 증언했다. 한동안 정확한 창작자를 알지 못했던 이 노래는 바블껌 이후인 1973년에 김세환, 윤형주가 <토요일 밤>으로 제목을 바꿔 널리 히트시켰다.
마일스톤 멤버들은 대학진학 후 활발한 활동을 벌이지 않아 자신들의 창작곡이 부족했다. 그래서 심플한 통기타 반주에 팝송 , 등을 번안했다. 타이틀곡 <나그네>는 흥미로운 사연이 있다. 음반 발표 전에 어느 대학의 강당 무대에 오른 마일스톤은 박목월의 시를 노래 가사로 사용한 <나그네>를 불렀다. 때마침 강사로 행사에 참석했다가 우연하게 자신의 시를 가사로 사용한 노래를 듣게 된 박목월은 화가나 “시는 시인만의 선율이 있는데 허락도 받지 않고 마음대로 노래로 만들었다”며 멤버들을 혼냈다. 하지만 마일스톤은 시인의 허락을 받지 않고 곡을 발표했다. 팝송 을 번안한 엔딩곡 <헤지고 어두워도>는 마일스톤과 바블껌이 함께 노래한 유일한 곡이다.

The joint debut album of the mixed duet Bubble Gum and the four-member folk group Milestone is the legendary 1970s rare folk song LP. There are many people who remember Bubble Gum, which has several hits, but Milestone's team name seems to be unfamiliar. Both teams have in common that the folk singer Lee Gyu-dae, the father of Korean traditional music artist Lee Ja-ram, is a musical center.
Babel Gum, formed by Gyu-dae Lee and Researcher Cho, is a popular duet of the time that first sang the camp songs ``Sonata'', ``Unrequited Love'' and ``On Saturday Night'' (the first version was on Thursday night) that young generations loved in the 1970s and 1980s. Was.
High School Men's Quartet Milestone
The four-member folk group Milestone started out as a high school student folk quartet. In 1967, Bae Jae High School 1st grader Lee Gyu-dae went to play at the "Literature Night" held in the auditorium of Jinmyeong Girls' High School. There he formed a quartet with his schoolmates after being impressed by the fantastic chords of the Middle Eastern high folk trio. The first team that was formed with the permission of Bong-Jun Lee, the homeroom teacher in the 7th class of the 1st grade, was'Voice Voice', which means'boy's voice'. The original members were high tenor Lee Gyu-dae, tenor Hong Seon-pyo (later Knicks jeans maker), baritone Kim Cheong-bae (the youngest son of poet Kim Hyun-seung), and bass Lee Tae-young (who served as a professor of atmospheric engineering at Yonsei University). They gathered in the school music room every day to practice singing mainly on hymns.
At the time, Ewha Womans University's six female vocalist Endam Trio (meaning “enclosed wall”) was active, but it was known by word of mouth among the students that male high school students sang while playing the guitar.
Bubblegum's debut stage 72 happened by chance
Lee Gyu-dae, who entered Soongsil University, continued her circle activities at YMCA. Bable Gum's hit songs "Sonata" and "Unrequited Love" are songs made during the college Y joint circle, "Tribal Society." The two, who naturally started singing practice, followed Lee Soo-man to the Cheongpyeong Festival and went on stage without schedule. Without a team name, he sang the chanson song <Dad Only Likes Mom> and New Zealand folk song <Love Song>, which he enjoyed during the Y Chorus days, and was baptized with unexpected applause.
The moderator Jeong Hong-taek (the weekly Korean entertainment reporter) who showed interest in them during the Cheongpyeong Festival said, “Because this is a mixed duet that sings beautiful songs like nursery rhymes, a refreshing name of'Balloon Gum' is good.” Gave. Babel Gum and Milestone's co-debut album
With the arrangement of Lee Gyu-dae, the introduction of the debut album of Bubble Gum and Milestone was held together at a studio in Majang-dong, Seoul. Produced as a split album by Oasis Records in January 1972, the jacket for this album was designed by Lee Gyu-dae's brother-in-law, Cho Seung-gu, a graduate of Hongik University's College of Art. A total of 11 songs were included in the album, and page A contains 6 songs from Bubble Gum and 5 songs from Milestone on page B.
Among the songs included in the mixed duet's Bubble Gum, several songs such as <Daddy Loves Only My Mother>, <Unrequited Love>, and <Thursday Night> were widely loved by the student population. Leader Gyu-dae Lee testified in an interview with the writer that "On Thursday Night" was a song learned by Soo-yeon Yoo (a professor at Soongsil University's Department of Social Affairs) who was a student at Soongsil University. This song, which had not known the exact creator for a while, was widely hit by Se-Hwan Kim and Hyeong-Ju Yoon in 1973, after Bubble Gum, by changing the title to <Saturday Night>.
Milestone members did not engage in active activities after entering college, so their original songs were insufficient. So I adapted pop songs, etc. to a simple acoustic guitar accompaniment. The title song <The Traveler> has an interesting story. Milestone, who went to the auditorium stage of a university before the release of the album, sang <The Traveler,> using Park Mok-wol's poem as the song lyrics. Park Mok-Wol, who just attended the event as a lecturer and accidentally listened to a song that used his poem as lyrics. However, Milestone released the song without the permission of the poet. The ending song <Even if It's Broken and Dark> is the only song that Milestone and Bubblegum sang together.
Oasis Records proposed a formal exclusive contract by offering a large sum to Bubble Gum, which drew unexpected hot interest. Afterwards, Bubble Gum released a solo book and leaps forward as a popular group. Now that 48 years have passed without help, this album has increased its existence value as a rare folk alum representing the 1970s to the extent that it was traded at a price of over 2 million won. A small amount of the CD version of this album has been re-released, but this is the first time that the LP version produced using the original master tape has been re-released.
