To a degree, I love Japan’s early 50s more than the earliest 30s/40s stuff. These (always) charming songs are more expressively sung, with voices showing personality, with much more swinging orchestras in original, full range arrangements, mostly sung in Japanese. All songs are great and ring in your ears, and sound already as true classics. There’s a boogie-woogie and mambo and later on also early Japanese flavoured song waltzing (7) influences. This is a perfect introduction to that period.
A first real surprise on the first CD is track 6 with a crossover featuring some powerful Japanese folk strumming mixed with the 50s orchestra and more Japanese-sounding song. After a rewarding Japanese waltz, Akiko Futaba shows a strong emotional quality in her voice in this waltzing song. Similar quality can be heard in voices like Shigeko Orii. Track 16 is exceptional too for its effective group singing train rhythm twist. Great also are the fast rollin’ lyrical rhythms sung by Shizuko Kasagi. I cannot describe all tracks, but this first CD alone certainly already is worth the buy.
The second album continues in the same vein. Then thoroughly the tracks continue to be entertaining in a less surprising, more predictable way, as the tendency to use predictable melodic lines and arrangements after the second half on the 50s starts to dominate and become more exploited. The cover of “Banana Boat” with harmony vocal responses I still think is a rather tasteful popular music interpretation that attracks attention. Directing now towards the early 60s is the last track by a girl vocal harmony group called The Peanuts.
