Kikagaku Moyo / 幾何学模様
Guruguru Brain Kikagaku Moyo : Masana Temples (JP,2018) LP/CD ***° vg-ex
The cover and first tracks are slightly misleading the direction of the band which is a mixture of two approaches, both with its own kind of charm. Its first few tracks, with sitar, acid folk fusion, sensitive song and acoustic/electric mixtures of old school eclectic fusion are the kind of marvelous mixture I really love to find in such a band. The second approach, once you realise where you are of the kind of psychedelic groove haze and a bit more stargazing moody pop music that is a bit more cloudy than that. But even here the band includes progressive jams, a touch of jazz even with a flavour that equally loves more relaxed tea time with nature in the background. This is already the band’s fourth album.

Beyond Beyond is Beyond Kikagaku Moyo:Forest of Lost Children (2014) LP/CD **° g-vg
This earlier album shows how they gradually have folded themselves out of its gazing jams later, while the moody vibe songs are dominant on this one. At the 5th track, “Hem” the band even becomes pretty wild with several layers of psychedelic bliss of improvisations, showing how this area can find its own kind of expansions. “Streets of Calcutta” is an Ananda Shankar cover, which does not yet reveal the later approach, because it is a rather rocky version compared to that more open eclectic style. The album ends with a pretty moody folkier jam, with some use of sitar and acoustic guitars too.
