There are a few compilations in this series. Another one is dedicated to jazz in Osaka (1924-1941), and a last one to Jazz in the Central City - Great Nagoya's Tsuru-Asahi Jazz Song Collection 1929-1938, both I have not checked yet merely because these compilations (even though with quality CD and CD box) remain rather expensive.
I knew already well the influence of Japanese music on the recordings of the 30s in Korea, so I am open to compare to the core of foreign influences but this still is very different. This has in fact little, or at least less influence from Japanese folk songs as I expected to find, and is almost entirely an alternative scene of old time music, jazz and later on, ballroom entertainment comparable mostly to the American model, and examples, performing also American and a few European songs to the island, even in American English more often. This isn’t copying but trying to bring it to life in another part of the world.
The roaring 20s/30s brought many rather grotesque songs and arrangements and singing, whose up tempo entertainment is rather fun. The singing can be operatic and filmic, where the brass slows down with it. Banjo rhythms embrace the fun rhythm. Sometimes rather bringing copies of foreign songs here and there are exceptions (track 16) which still keep a real Japanese influence. Odd to hear is an interpretation of the instrumental intro from the 3 Penny Opera by Kurt Well (originally written in Berlin). It is played a bit slower, does not have the socialist idealism power as the originals, so misses a bit the original creative point. The second CD reaches the 40s with changes in music style that happens likewise to foreign model. The music sounds more serious, influenced by the orchestras, which become bigger and more fully arranged, more ballroom-like, bringing in associations of step dance, ballroom dance and of course the models of the Hollywood movies of the time.
The double album shows a good picture of the Tokyo jazz scene from which I amazed via this double CD how little effort has been taken to sound (more) original (-by adding a Japanese vision or interpretation for instance-), except from that they perform the originals as good as it can to establish a western-based scene of their own.
